Piano tuning is an old profession dating back to the age of the harpsichord when tempered scales were being experimented with. The great composer Johann Sebastian Bach, came up with a tuning system where each interval was equalised out so that chords and passages would sound pleasant in any key. To prove this, he wrote the 48 Preludes and Fugues, otherwise known as The Well Tempered Klavier. Today, piano technicians tune pianos to essentially Bach's system, which we call "equal temperament". I have embraced new technology to capitalise even further on Bach's brilliant tuning system. I use a revolutionary computerised tuning system that assesses each piano on its own merits, takes into account how long it has been since the last tuning, takes into account the size and age of the piano, the scale design and string length and then calculates the optimum tuning for that instrument, as well as the amount of overpull to maximise tuning stability. Once this is done, I complete the tuning by ear, that failsafe and age old method, which gives maximum purity of tone and overall beauty of sound. The end result is that you'll hear your piano like you've never heard it before. |
