Your piano needs annual tuning and maintenance. Advanced pianists and teachers with more critical needs sometimes request tuning and maintenance two or even three times per year. For general household piano enjoyment though, once a year is fine. Tuning of a piano is a delicate and sensitive procedure usually lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the initial condition and age of the piano and time between previous tuning. Sometimes, a piano which has not been tuned for many years, will be very flat (way below concert pitch). In these cases, a pitch-raise is necessary before a stable and reliable tuning can be performed. On other occasions, a piano which is very old and also very flat, may not stand being risen back to concert pitch (A440), in which case I will usually tune it to an historic pitch.
